How CBT Can Leave You ‘Feeling Great’: A Conversation with David D Burns

It's a popular misconception that a therapist is supposed to give us clear answers to our problems. While they can help show us the road to healing, we’re the ones who have to walk that path. It's just as important to take responsibility for our recovery and commit to the difficult mental work that comes with the process.

In this episode, Dr David D Burns, author of Feeling Great: The Revolutionary New Treatment for Anxiety and Depression, explains the science behind cognitive behavioural therapy. He shares some powerful techniques he uses to get his patients on the path to recovery and emphasises why you have to take a proactive role in this journey.

"I've had 17 different anxiety disorders. That's fine. I was able to write my book with panic attacks, and that's why I love treating anxiety because whatever the person's got, I can say “Oh, I had that too. I know how sucky that is. And I can show you how to turn that around really fast”".

"But I think that motivation is huge. And in all the addictions, I don't think it's so much a matter of techniques as a matter of deciding if that's what you want".

"I put the patient in the position of convincing me, and I play the role of their subconscious resistance. And I found that creates a lot of power and prevents a lot of failure because the failure in the treatment of addictions, just like the failure in the treatment of depression and anxiety, is the result of the therapist who tries to help the patient".

"If they go, then you're not in the unethical position of trying to force someone to do something against their will. And if they say [yes], you’re empowered, and they become empowered to change. But very few therapists know how to do that or are willing to do that".

"If a patient wasn’t going to do psychotherapy homework, I wasn't going to save them, and I finally accepted that and decided to make the patient accountable rather than try to save everybody. It just — the whole universe rotated. And my practice became vastly more effective and vastly more rewarding".
