"If you use alcohol to deal with problems and take the edge off things, a lot of the time, the problems are there or, as you said, there’s changes that are happening. But it's not about stopping drinking that causes them. It's just the method you used to take the edge off them is no longer there for you. So you have to face them and deal with them rather than just sort of anaesthetized through them".

"This is out of your comfort zone but not out of your capability. And I think that if we sit here and look at things and think they're going to be really dreadful...the vast majority of stuff we do day to day that stresses us is not actually life-threatening".

"We tend to drink and we tend to drink at the end of the day. So you get out of work. You feel good finishing work anyway. You meet your mates and it’s nice to meet your mates, so all of these things is what gives the actual feeling of pleasure".

"A lot of what you get with a drug is what you expect of it. It's a hugely powerful thing to sit in a room without TV, radio, friends, anything. Just sit there and have a drink and see how it makes you feel".

"The starting point is just to understand what a craving is, and it is just fantasizing about something... And I think there's a few points to take away from that. Firstly, bear in mind what fantasies are. You know, when you fantasize about something, you’re only looking at the good part of it, so you never go into all the bad parts".
