“I just thought I can do this myself... “I’m a grownup; of course I can stop doing this. I’m not that weak, surely.” Except it isn’t about just being weak. It’s about, actually when you’re with other people, they understand you”.
“If you don’t surround yourself with people, you can’t talk. So what really happened was, all the reasons I’d got into that place, in that situation in the first place of being a gambler who was suffering gambling harm was because I wasn’t talking. So I was trying to find an escape”.
“Podcasts like this…they’re only there to get you on the path, and then once they get you on the path, you’ve got to do the work, you’ve got to show up, you’ve got to feel uncomfortable, you’ve got to feel vulnerable, you’ve got to talk about your shame”.
“I think it was just trying to be really, really present in the day, not thinking about the future, not thinking about the past, filling my days with useful activities, talking to people, facing up to challenges, and realizing that I can get through those challenges without drinking or gambling”.
“First and foremost, you’ve got to get over that shame prior and just offload and talk to somebody about what you’ve done, because once you do that, then you can get accountability. People can help you...You’re not alone anymore”.
