When I became someone that doesn’t drink alcohol, the magnitude of the journey rose in front of me like a blue whale coming up for a bit of fun. This thing that I was doing had everything to do with alcohol, and nothing to do with alcohol.
It was not enough to be someone that doesn’t drink alcohol.
I needed to take the vow to live a continually, evolving experience of personal growth; values-driven life of meaning and purpose. I needed to learn to be a conscious parent, conscious husband, and a conscious leader - and then I needed to teach others to do the same.
LIVING ABOVE THE LINE; CHOOSING A LIFE OF PRESENCE, NOT DRAMA, IS WHERE I WANT US ALL TO BE. IF I CAN DO THIS, SO CAN YOU.
The day I became someone that doesn’t drink alcohol, I lost everything.
▽ My wife of 15-years left me.
▽ I lost permanent contact with my 10-year-old boy.
▽ I lost my home.
▽ I lost all of my friends.
▽ I became estranged from my family.
▽ I had no mental map of who I was, what I should do, and where I should go.
It was at this moment, where I decided that I could CHOOSE to have a different life. I had that power. Nobody, but me. I realised that the only person on this planet capable of preventing me from getting what I want was ME!
So I made a few different choices.
△ I quit my 19-year railway career.
△ I travelled around the world writing and interviewing people (I had no experience in either of these areas).
△ I fell in love again and married a beautiful woman.
△ I had a daughter.
△ I shifted continents moving from the UK to live in California.
△ I quit addictions to gambling, sugar, pornography, anger.
△ I became a vegan.
△ I became an effective altruist.
△ I surrounded myself with some of the brightest and most beautiful people.
△ At 45 I am in the best physical, mental and spiritual health of my life.
A decade ago, I lived in a small mining town with a population of 8,000 people. I worked as an Area Production Manager for a company I loathed, and a position that would bring me to tears. I existed in a marriage that was going nowhere. I wasn’t present for my son. All I did was drink, gamble and drink some more. I was lost. I wore so many masks, and donned so much armour it was both suffocating and weary. I was so tired.
AND NOW, I LIVE A CONSCIOUS LIFE. I HAVE DRAMA, WHO DOESN’T? BUT AT LEAST I KNOW WHEN DRAMA IS IN MOTION AND WHAT I NEED TO DO TO CONTROL IT.
If a working-class kid from a small provincial town who left school at 16 with no qualifications, can beat alcohol addiction and create a brand new life, then so can you, and you, and you, and you!

ABOUT LEE DAVY
I have never met my father, and unlike the soap operas, I don’t care. I do care about my children, Jude and Zia. Zia is my greatest teacher. Mrs Kingscott was my English teacher. I bumped into her when I was in my late 20s, and she told me that my poor behaviour made her cry. I cry a lot, and the theme seems to be an underdog story. The documentary that made me cry the most was Under The Wire, and for a movie: Bridges of Madison County. I’ve never been to Madison County, but when I first became someone that doesn’t drink alcohol, I joined the poker industry and travelled all over the world. The world frightens me. I am also afraid of the cockroach I saw in the garage last night, swimming in the sea, and the dark. I’m so afraid of the dark, I wear a sleeping mask to bed and freak out if I lose it because I have a habit of seeing people in my bedroom; not dead people, but not real either. That said, I don’t have a bedroom.
I have been homeless since my first wife divorced me. A divorce is a brutal experience. So was severing my penile frenulum, being dropped from my school football team when I was nine, and being stabbed after a drunken night out in Cyprus - but the divorce is the most painful experience of my life. Life rhymes with the wife; her name is Liza, and she is from Los Angeles, LA is where I live for six months of the year. Year rhymes with beer, and I haven’t had a drink of that stuff since 2009. 2009 is the year I left the railway after 19-years service. Service is my ‘theme’. My favourite theme tune has to be Pavarotti’s Nessum Dorma, the theme tune for the Italia 90 World Cup. During that World Cup, my parents went away for a dirty weekend, and I had a house party. Someone called the cops when Kevin Baldwin pissed on Brett Tozer's head, and then put him through my mother’s bedroom door. I was blissfully unaware; in the kitchen delivering nine Alsatian pups. That party was legendary, as were my birthday bashes from 18-35, but thanks to alcohol I can’t remember any of them because I was always so smashed.
I love smashed avocado, smoothies with peanut butter, and anything sweet that doesn’t have sugar. I believe sugar is a drug, and it’s the hardest thing I have ever tried to quit. Talking about quitting things, I have quit smoking, drugs, drinking (alcohol, not water and stuff, that would be nuts, and I haven’t quit nuts), gambling, pornography, animal products and picking my nose and flicking it on the floor. I sleep on a futon on the floor (that’s why the cockroach scared me). Futon rhymes with Zuton, and they’re a great band. So are Portishead, Duran Duran, Placebo, Muse, Leftfield, and Max Richter. Bands play live, and my first concert was James in the G-Mex in Manchester in the early 90s. Radiohead supported them, but nobody knew who they were. My favourite concert was Coldplay because it was the first gig for my son, Jude when he was ten. Ten is the age that my parents moved me from England to Wales. I have lived in Wales for the majority of my life with stints in Bristol and Southampton. Two of my best friends live in Southampton. I met them when I was a drinker, and like most of those friends, I don’t see them anymore.

The STRIVE Method for Addictions is based on James Prochaska’s Transtheoretical Behavioural Model for Change. In a nutshell, Prochaska’s theory proposes that people traverse through phasal structure of change, and understanding where someone is in across that spectrum is critical to effective treatment.
The acronym STRIVE represents the six phases of addiction, and we’ve further distilled the process into three overarching categories:
Module 1 - STUCK
Understanding why we become addicted, and why we find it so hard to break free of our addictions. Themes covered include: The Bigger Picture of Stuckness, Vulnerability, Change Agents, Liberation.
Module 2 - THOUGHT
Understanding why we feel so ambivalent to change, and how to find the motivation needed to overcome that ambivalence. Themes covered include: Motivation, Change Agents, The Language of Change and Resistance.
Module 3 - READY
Preparing to become 1000 Days Sober. Themes covered include: Ritualisation, Principles of Habit, Codependency and The Vow.
Module 4 - INITIATIVE
Rewiring our thinking around alcohol by understanding the truth about alcohol. Themes covered include: Psychosocial Integration, Alcoholism as an Invisible, Violent and Dominant Belief System, Worldviews and Shame.
Module 5 - VIGILANCE
Maintaining our new understanding of alcohol addiction by raising awareness of our new belief systems mentally and physically. Themes covered include: Moderation, Anonymity, The Alcohol Spectrum and The Dip.
Module 6 - EVOLUTION
With alcohol in the rearview mirror it’s time to learn how to live a conscious life. Themes covered include: The Line, Approval, Security, Control, Radical Responsibility and 80,000 Hours.
Each phase takes a month to complete.
Students are not required to stop drinking until the Initiative Phase (Month #4).

HOW IT ALL WORKS
The STRIVE Method for Addictions consists of more than 120 online coaching videos and assignments. You are drip fed content (between 5-7 assignments), weekly.
You maintain access to the STRIVE Method assignments for life, and it’s an ever evolving system meaning different lessons are added and removed when the team feels it’s appropriate. You will be notified by email when lessons are added or amended.
A 1000 Days Sober coach will lead each group, and the plan is to move forward as a unit, and it’s important to keep up because the group experience ends after 6-months.
There may be a need for you to restart an earlier phase should your coach feel that there is a need to do this, because it’s essential that you only take action to be 1000 Days Sober once you’re ready to do so.
You are responsible for completing your assignments, and commenting on your peer groups. Discourse on homework assignments continues in your Marco Polo group, and in the private Facebook group.
History shows that the more you immerse yourself into the experience and STRIVE community the greater your success of graduating from the program as someone that doesn’t drink alcohol.
